Privacy Policy
Take The L ("the App", "we", "us", or "our") is a social party game developed by Oliver Lay. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. We respect your privacy and only collect what is necessary to run the game.
If you have any questions, contact support@oliverlay.dev.
1. Information We Collect
When you create an account and play Take The L, we collect:
| Data | Why |
|---|---|
| Email address | To create your account, sign you in, and send password-reset emails. |
| Username (display name) | To identify you to other players in lobbies, leaderboards, and friend requests. |
| Authentication credentials (encrypted password hash, session id) | Handled by Firebase Authentication — we never see your actual password. |
| Game stats (career Ls taken, career Ws, last-active timestamp, profile icon) | To power the in-game leaderboard and your profile. |
| Friends & friend requests | To let you build a friends list and invite people to lobbies. |
| Lobby & gameplay data (temporary) | To run real-time multiplayer games. Lobby documents are typically deleted within minutes of the game ending. |
| Presence / connection state | Stored in Firebase Realtime Database so the app can detect when a player disconnects mid-game. Automatically removed when you go offline. |
We do not collect:
- Real names, addresses, phone numbers, or any payment info (payments, when present, are handled entirely by the App Store and Google Play — we never see your card details).
- Precise device location, contacts, calendar, microphone, camera, photos, or health data.
- Browsing history or behavior across other apps.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the information above solely to:
- Operate the game (matchmaking, lobbies, scoring, turn order, disconnect detection).
- Maintain your account and friends list.
- Display the global leaderboard.
- Detect and recover from sessions hijacked or signed in on multiple devices.
- Communicate with you about your account (e.g., password resets).
- Diagnose crashes and fix bugs (via Flutter / Firebase logging; no PII is sent in crash reports).
We do not sell your personal information to anyone. We do not use your data for advertising or cross-app tracking. The App contains no third-party analytics or advertising SDKs.
3. Where Your Data Lives
Your data is stored on Google Cloud infrastructure via Firebase:
- Firebase Authentication — account credentials.
- Cloud Firestore — user profiles, friends, leaderboards, transient lobby state.
- Firebase Realtime Database — presence (online/offline) for active games.
Data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS / TLS) and at rest by Firebase.
4. Sharing With Third Parties
We share data only with the service providers strictly required to run the App:
- Google / Firebase (Authentication, Firestore, Realtime Database, Cloud Storage). See Firebase's Privacy and Security documentation.
- Apple App Store & Google Play — only when you purchase a subscription; they process the payment and share subscription status with us. We never receive your payment details.
We do not sell or rent your data, and we never share it with advertisers, marketers, data brokers, or analytics firms.
5. Your Rights and Choices
You can, at any time:
- Access the information stored in your profile by viewing the in-game Settings / Profile screens.
- Change your username and profile icon at any time in the app.
- Delete your account directly from Settings → "Delete Account". This permanently removes your account, profile, stats, friends entries, friend requests, and presence data within minutes.
- Reset your password via the "Forgot password?" link on the login screen.
You can also email support@oliverlay.dev at any time to request a manual export or deletion. We will respond within 30 days.
If you are in the EU/UK, you have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict, or port your data, and to object to processing, under GDPR. If you are in California, you have similar rights under the CCPA. To exercise these rights, contact the support email above.
6. Data Retention
- Active accounts: data is kept while your account exists.
- Deleted accounts: data is removed from Firestore and Firebase Auth immediately upon deletion; presence and lobby records are automatically purged within minutes.
- Lobby documents are kept only for the duration of an active game plus a short cool-down for the post-game podium. Stale lobbies are automatically cleaned up.
- Backups: Firebase service-level backups may retain data for up to 30 days for disaster recovery, after which they are purged.
7. Children's Privacy
Take The L is not directed to children under 13 (or the applicable minimum age in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us at support@oliverlay.dev and we will delete it.
8. Security
We rely on Firebase for storage and authentication, which provides industry-standard encryption in transit and at rest. We follow the principle of least privilege via tightly scoped Firestore Security Rules. No system is 100% secure — please use a strong, unique password and notify us immediately if you suspect unauthorized access.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes we will update the "Last updated" date at the top and, where appropriate, notify you in the App. Continued use of the App after a change means you accept the updated policy.
